The Smaller Learning Community (SLC) was created by the school in 2004-2005. In 2005-2006, the first ninth grade SLC and their core teachers looped to grade ten and another ninth grade SLC was created for incoming freshmen. Participation in professional development programs enables the faculty to create and implement rigorous standards based curricula and lessons to meet the needs of our diverse student population. Students and their parents are invited and encouraged to participate in the Academic Guidance Program’s (AGP) advisory sessions during grades nine and ten. Parents and child discuss post high school plans with a faculty advisor and select courses to best meet the requirements of the student’s academic and career plans.
Aiea High School continues to encourage technological expertise in all venues of school life, and to strengthen communication and relationships with the military and the Aiea communities.
History
Na Ali'i O'Aiea
'Aiea High School was founded in 1961 in a sugar plantation town overlooking historic Pearl Harbor. From a modest beginning of eight buildings which included the cafeteria and the library, AHS has expanded to fifteen buildings. During the past forty-seven years, our school's enrollment has flourished from about two hundred students at its inception to more than 1,200.
Our school is 100% networked for computer/data and video transmissions. The school's Local Area Network (LAN) is connected to the Department of Education's Wide Area Network and provides all networked computers access to the Internet.
In October 2004, SCBM council was transformed to School Community Council (SCC). The SCC composed of elected members of the school's stakeholders, was developed as a result of the enactment of Act 51.
'Aiea High School maintains its strong commitment to improving education for all students through the collaborative efforts of all role groups-students, teachers, parents and members of the community. In 1999, 'Aiea High School was recognized as an outstanding State Blue Ribbon School. The Smaller Learning Community (SLC) was formed in 2004 to offer ninth graders a seamless transition to high school. 'Aiea High School participated in the Focus on Learning (FOL) Self Study process and received its accreditation in June 2006.
'Aiea High School's standards based curriculum meets the academic, vocational, and interest needs of its students. Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities sponsored by student government and grade levels, service clubs, special interest groups, and inter-scholastic athletics. AHS continues to investigate and initiate programs that will challenge students.
