Kindergarten
Welcome To Kindergarten
Kindergarten is a special time in a child's life. Kindergarten at Mokapu Elementary develops the "whole child". While adhering and following the Hawaii State Standards, we believe that young children enter kindergarten excited about learning. Following the developmentally appropriate practices, we believe that we need to nurture that excitement and have the student continue to explore the world around him.
Some of the highlights of kindergarten include:
- Kinder Kamp to help orientate the students and parents to kindergarten at the beginning of the year.
- Hands-on learning such as cooking projects and making gingerbread cookies at Christmas.
- Using thematic units for social studies and science, such as plants, animals, butterflies life cycles, spiders, pumpkins, etc.
- Growing class gardens with a variety of flowers and vegetables.
- Field Trips to the Fire Station (Fire Safety): Sea Life Park (study of ocean animals), Zoo (animals and their habitats), and the Children's Discovery Center.
- Celebrating the 100th day of school.
- Family involvement with Kindergarten Reading and Math Nights.
- Each Kindergarten student will keep a Kindergarten Pride or Memory Portfolio.

Grade 6
Welcome To Grade 6
Aloha from the 6th grade
Sixth graders at Mokapu work very hard especially the first, second and third quarters as we prepare for the Hawaii State Assessments which are given in the beginning of the 4th quarter. Academics take on a different dimension as we prepare our students for the introduction to middle school. Our students spent the majority of the day in their homeroom but do switch classes for science, social studies and health. Although our grading system is consistent with the rest of the school, (ME, MP, N, U) we do convert the year end grade to the traditional scoring system (A, B, C and D.)
As a compliment to the academics our sixth graders participate in several engaging activities:
Performing arts program. The students are treated to lessons in song, dance and drama. The culmination of this 3 week session is a two-hour performance for parents and classmates.
Partnerships with Kalaheo High School. Our six graders develop relationships with high school students as they instruct them in health class, coach them during field days, and correspond with them as pen pals.
Science Fair and Spelling Bee.
Sports Team. Six grade boys and girls are encouraged to try out for the basketball and track teams and the two activities are both held during the second half of the school.

Our Mission
A place to be heard
We meet every other month for general meetings. The meetings are to educate parents and teachers of our events and special topics at our school, and to offer time for parent's concerns to be heard. We also try to be present at the PCNC monthly Parent Coffee Hour for questions and updates.
Fundraising
We organize many fundraisers every year to help fund our enrichment programs, appreciation breakfast/weeks, babysitting at the meetings, and funding special needs for the school.
Enrichment Clubs
The PTA is proud to sponsor many after-school clubs: Craft Club, Mad Science, Mokapu Children's Chorus, Deployment Club, Math and Geography Superstars, and a NeNe Award Book Club.
Most are offered at a very reduced cost to parents, and the PTA hopes to start offering grants to some of the students.

Three For Me
This year the PTA is sponsoring a new program in our school called 'Three for Me.
Three for Me is a promise, a promise from a parent to the school and a promise from parent to child. By signing a promise card, parents commit to volunteer three hours of their time to the school. Parents can fulfill this promise by helping the school in any way for just 3 hours. The 3 hours can even be broken up over time.
If a parent works and has limited availability, the PTA/PCNC will take the time to find activities those parents can do from home to fulfill their promise. Babysitting for another volunteer is considered volunteer hours.
**Parent involvement is critical to creating great schools.**
Thank you to all those who turned in their 'Three for Me' forms. It's Awesome!!! that so many of you want to help make this a great school year! Thank you! Make sure to check out the 'Three for Me' "Walk of Fame" in the school's breezeway, to see all the parents who have fulfilled their promise. The stars are added at the beginning of every month.

STATUS REPORT CARDS
Mokapu Elementary school is using the Department of Education standards-based report card. The school’s curriculum, assessment, and instruction are designed using the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards. These standards make it clear what a child is expected to know and be able to do. The teacher communicates each student’s progress towards achievement of these standards for a reporting period:
Status Report- sent home at the end of each quarter provides students and parents a summary report of the student’s achievement of the standards.
The standards based report card is intended to help everyone understand a student’s interests, strengths and talents relative to the standards. With this information, steps can be taken to improve school performance. For more information, visit DOE Report Card website at reportcard.k12.hi.us., or see your childs teacher.
