AGT News
AGT students have been busy reading interesting literature books this quarter, building vocabulary and comprehension skills. Grade 6 is reading, “Rifles for Watie,” a historical fiction book set during the Civil War. Grade 5 is reading Graham Salisbury’s “Eyes of the Emperor,” another historical fiction book that takes place in Hawaii during WWII. The fourth graders are reading, “Hatchet,” a story about a boy trying to survive in the Canadian wilderness after his plane crashes. After finishing the book, “Bunnicula,” the third graders have been working on free verse poetry, water color art, and still life drawings.
AGT students also had fun working on their marble and arrow challenges. Third grade-fifth grade learned about force, gravity, and friction. We had a lot of interesting and creative designs for the marble challenge. The sixth graders have continued to refine their paper arrow designs to get it to fly 30 meters. Some are very close! In the next few months, they will have a chance to tinker with making their own roller coaster designs. The fourth graders will be working on making trap models that they would use if they were stranded in the wilderness!
On Saturday, Nov. 7, our Mighty Mokapu Robotics team participated in the First Lego League Robotics Tournament at Sacred Hearts Academy. They have been meeting faithfully, every Wednesday and Thursday after school, to prepare for the competition.
They did not advance to the State Championship this year, but they came away with a wealth of experience. They learned how to do research, work as a team, the importance of perseverance, practiced oral communication skills, and built and programmed their robots to accomplish missions. They will be sharing their presentations to classes in the next few weeks.
Happy holidays to all!
