PE News
For the next month in PE for grades 5 and 6 we are fitness testing using the fitness gram program to evaluate fitness levels. Grades 3-4 will be doing activities related to hockey, throwing, and dance. Grades K-2 will be participating in activities and skills that relate to dance and rhythms, kicking, passing of balls, movement skills, and low level gymnastics. The Spark fitness room should be opening soon; the room will feature exercise balls, medicine balls, exer-bands, agility balls, DDR (dance dance revolution), Wii Fit station, and an exercise bike.
You can help our school and PE program by donating items for the fitness room:
- exercise balls variety of sizes
- light hand weights preferably coated
- exercise machines such as bike or treadmill
- steps (like the Reebok step)
- any other creative items
We are currently trying a class by class experiment using exercise balls as seats for student’s benefits:
- students less fidgety
- focus on class work better
- exercising while sitting
- building core muscles
- develop good posture
- brain stimulation for learning
Currently we have 2 class sets but are trying to get more (help). A few comments from teachers are students tend to appreciate their ball and the responsibility, students take less trips to the bathroom, students are quieter in class, kids are moving and not getting up out of their seat as much.
Don’t forget do your pre-holiday exercising to combat the holiday goodies that are eaten. Exercise as a family especially with all of the holidays and furlough days happening.
