Ala Wai Elementary School

Ala Wai School is a Positive Action School, steeped in the schoolwide belief that students learn best when cared for and given high expectations. This picturesque school of 500 + students is located minutes away from the University Of Hawaii Manoa, against the scenic Waikiki skyline and serves urban Honolulu from Moiliili to Waikiki in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. Honoring its diverse student population, Ala Wai School is proud of its strong programs that focus on building self-esteem and supporting the “whole student” including Primary School Adjustment Project (PSAP), English as Second Language (ESLL), Gifted and Talented (GT), music, PE, drama, art, computer, and bonding educational fieldtrips and activities.

Ala Wai continues to garner a number of prestigious grants and honors. Ala Wai School received the Department of Education Distinguished Achievement Award and the Reading First Grant. Its music & arts program was honored by the UH College of Education Award for Excellence in Arts Education. We received the Artist in The Schools Grant for Drama, the Good Idea Teacher Grant, and the Honolulu Academy of “Art Art to Go” program. Of the 256 schools in Hawaii, Ala Wai was recognized by the Honolulu Magazine this year as most improved elementary school.

Ala Wai served as a partner in teacher training with University of Hawaii Manoa Master in Education in Teaching Program. Teachers follow a standards based curriculum and will begin implementing an electronic standards based report card this year in 2006-07. The eight member School Community Council provides input and review of the school academic and financial plans.

Many community partnerships such as the 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans, Diamond Head Rotary International, FELLOWS Senior volunteers and the Kaimuki High School Child Care Classes, and HIPPY (Hawaiian preschool parent project), Honolulu Academy of Arts, Iolani School Big Brothers Big Sisters help Ala Wai School achieve its goals in raising student achievement and providing quality student support.

There are many activities on campus including A+, Kamaaina Kids before school care, Kumon, Kaimuki Community School for Adults English and computer classes. The very active Friends of Ala Wai School PTSA provides celebrations, and numerous opportunities for parents to learn more about the school, and become actively involved.
