Located in downtown Honolulu, Central Middle School's history extends back to 1878 when Princess Ruth Luka Ke'elikolani built a palace (Keoua Hale) on the site where Central Middle School now stands. In 1926, workers razed the historic termite-eaten landmark, Keoua Hale, and replaced it with a fire-proof school. In 1928 Central Junior High School was established. Since then, CMS has served students from Kakaako, Palama, central Honolulu, and Chinatown. The students in grades 6-8 come from varied and diverse backgrounds which are reflected in the more than 15 languages spoken by our students.
Recently, Central Middle School has begun a partnership with Edison Alliance. This partnership will serve to focus our efforts on creating a culture of achievement through continued implementation of our strong standards-based curriculum, meeting the diverse needs of our students through clear and high expectations, and parent involvement in the decision making process for their children and our school community. Central Middle School, in an effort to provide an extended school day for tutorials and enrichment programs, is developing a partnership with Planet Central/Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii and Project Rally. These after school programs will offer a safe, structured and supervised after school learning environment for our students while meeting the unique needs of adolescents.
Central Middle School's Summary of Progress Report shows how teaching, learning and assessments are being based and aligned to Hawaii State Standards and Benchmarks. It summarizes progress made in accomplishing school improvement goals.
