Ernest Bowen DeSilva Elementary School

Ernest Bowen DeSilva Elementary School is nestled in the middle class Kaumana Ainako residential area. Thirty-five percent of the students come from outside the school's district on geographic exceptions (G.E.s). Twenty-seven percent of the students are on Free/Reduced lunch status. Our students represent all of Hawaii's various ethnic groups. All segments of the school community have embraced the vision of "excellence in education". Students have continued to excel academically as evidenced by results from the statewide assessment of the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards – HCPS III. E. B. DeSilva teachers have continued their participation in the Standards Based Change Process (SBCP).

While maintaining gains in reading and writing our teachers will use the SBCP to focus on strengthening the school's math program. Recent HSA results have indicated that mathematics is the school's greatest area of need (GAN). E.B. DeSilva School is extremely fortunate to have an active and supportive PTSA. Through the PTSA parents/guardians have facilitated improvements to the school's computer lab, classroom computers, PE supplies, and direct support to each student. Our School Community Council (SCC) has supported school improvement by participating in and endorsing the development of the 2006-07 Academic and Financial Plan. Additionally, the SCC has endorsed the school's request for the maximum number of Waiver and Professional Development Days. Students and teachers with the support of Hilo area businesses have been active in a wide array of student service projects.

Our PTSA and teachers are presently engaged in development of an enrichment program (e.g. art, ceramics, music, foreign languages, & robotics) to made available to all students in the fall of 2006-07. The May 2006 edition of the HONULULU magazine has rated E.B. DeSilva 20th in the State out of 259 schools. This is up from 30th in 2005.
