Governor Wallace Rider Farrington High School, a public high school serving the Kalihi community for over 70 years, has a student population of over 2500. The community is predominately lower socio-economic families with diverse ethnic backgrounds and a smaller number of middle class families. Many students are immigrants who require intensive instruction in English as a second language.
The school has moved toward smaller learning communities with all 9th and 10th grade students in teams. Students in eleventh and twelfth grades are encouraged to select a focused career pathway. There are several integrated vocational programs, including a health academy that was nationally recognized for excellence. The 4x4 block schedule supports an extensive elective program and allows for additional support to students who are behind. There is a strong emphasis on reading, with a program for intensive remediation if needed. In addition, Farrington students excel in both visual and performing arts, and there are many opportunities for students to participate in these areas.
In the spring of 2005, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges granted Farrington High School a six-year term of accreditation, with a midterm review, expiring on June 30, 2011.
