In the late 1700's, King Kamehameha commanded people near Hilo to plant taro so that his warriors would be fed when they arrived in the area. The residents planted a large field in one day. Kamehameha named the area Ha'aheo, meaning proud, to honor their work. From taro to sugar cane, to agriculture and future residences; the land of Ha'aheo continues to support a proud and hardworking community.
Ha'aheo Elementary School is located on the former taro field overlooking Hilo Bay. Founded in 1888 to educate the children of sugar plantation workers, Ha'aheo has an enrollment of 169 students in grades K – 6. Ha'aheo follows an inclusive data-driven, developmentally appropriate practice that organizes its students into three multi-age groups. Currently, Ha'aheo is in its third year of implementation of the new standards based report cards. Other methods of evaluation that Ha'aheo prides itself in are student-led conferences and standards-based progress folios.
Within the last two school years, Ha'aheo has adopted project-based learning experiences in each of its grade level teams. All projects last the entire school year and are aligned with the Hawaii State Content and Performance Standards in all core content areas and fully integrate the Department's General Learner Outcomes. These are just a few examples of how Ha'aheo focuses on the development of the "whole child".
Ha'aheo Elementary School's Summary of Progress Report shows how teaching, learning and assessments are being based and aligned to Hawaii State Standards and Benchmarks. It summarizes progress made in accomplishing school improvement goals.
