Lt. Col. Horrace Meek Hickam Elementary School

Horace Meek Hickam Elementary School was established in 1950 and is situated at Manzelman Circle on Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu. Adjacent to our school is the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. The enrollment of approximately 850 includes students whose families are connected to the Air Force, Army, National Guard, or Navy. The population of our school is predominantly Caucasian, with a scattering of students of Asian, Polynesian, Hispanic and African- American background, and also includes a few students who have limited English proficiency.

A highly transient population, students come from many school systems throughout the nation and from schools for U.S. dependents established in foreign countries. This results in significant differences in levels of achievement and maturity throughout the grade levels. To accommodate the wide diversity and establish a sense of stability for our students, our school provides strong academic and co-curricular programs (e.g., programs for Students of Limited English Proficiency, Gifted and Talented, and for Specific Learning Disabilities). Other programs include Student Council, Supplementary Reading, Speech and Language, Music, Physical Education, and Computer Technology.

Through a Radford Complex grant, the Transition Center was continued, with the coordinator providing school tours, information, and a welcome to new families transitioning into our school. Reading and Math tests were administered to incoming students to provide classroom teachers with an academic snapshot.

We strive to provide a safe, disciplined, drug-free learning environment for all of our students.

Hickam Elementary School has been operating under School Community Council, formerly known as the School/Community-Based Management.

Lt. Col. Horrace Meek Hickam Elementary School The Transition Center

The Transition Center was made possible through funding from a federal No Child Left Behind grant, and is designed to help new arrivals during the school year transition into the schools in our Radford Complex. The grant provided for a school site coordinator and computers. Our Hickam transition center welcomes incoming students and families.

The Transition Center at Hickam Elementary has four main functions:

1. Family Support: To provide community information and services to the family (both on base and in the civilian community). Our mission is to welcome new students and families to the Hickam "ohana".

2. Social Transition: To help students with the adjustment to our school (tour of the school, meeting support staff, orientation to school rules and expectations, etc.) A student "HOST" (Helping Our Students Together) will be assigned to each student in their classroom to act as an extension of the Transition Center. The HOST will aid the classroom teacher with the new student's orientation. The Transition Center is also available to assist students who are preparing to leave the school when their parent receives relocation orders.

3. Academic Support: Conduct initial assessment in reading and mathematics when a student enters the school. In addition, some short term tutoring may be available as needed.

4. Partnership with the PCNC: To determine appropriate additional school level supports as needed.
