Hilo Intermediate School was first opened in 1924 at its present site in downtown Hilo. This historic school serves as a feeder school to six elementary feeder schools. The philosophy of the school has evolved from of the cultural heritage of both the school and the surrounding community. The Positive Behavioral Support System developed and implemented by the school has been a driving force for student success in the classroom along with a standards-based curriculum. The School Community Council (SCC) meets on the second Thursday of each month.
Under the laws of No Child Left Behind, Hilo Intermediate has been placed as a school undergoing restructuring due to not meeting Adequate Yearly Progress. The National Reform Model "America's Choice" has been implemented to increase student learning.
