Honaunau Elementary School

Located in the South Kona district of the Big Island, Honaunau School has an enrollment of approximately 140 students in grades prekindergarten to 5. Many school families are long-time residents while new families come from many different parts of the world, many as migrant workers. Some telling statistics: approximately 85% of all students receive free or reduced-cost lunch, 15% of all students are special education, 28% of all students are classified as English Language Learners (ELL), 56% are part-Hawaiian, and 21% are Hispanic.

Parents are encouraged to take an active part in their children's learning. The school hosts numerous activities for parents and children throughout the year. These sessions range from holiday crafts and activities to structured times where parents have opportunities to read stories and play math games with their children.

Honaunau School is in its seventh year of the America's Choice Design Model. Student performance has been positively impacted by implementation of this program, as shown by the students' improved performances in reading, writing, and math over time.

Under the federal guidelines dictated by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, Honaunau has met the goals for Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) since 2002-03 and continues to be a school with "in good standing", unconditional status.
