Honoka'a High School & Intermediate School

Honoka'a High and Intermediate School is located in the center of Honoka'a on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. The school was established in 1889 and serves a large geographic area including the communities of Waimea, Kawaihae, Ahuloa, Honoka'a, Kukuihaele, Paahau and Paauilo. Five elementary and middle schools feed into Honoka'a High and Intermediate School.

The communities of the Hamakua coast are largely rural and rooted in agriculture. Sugar was the leading industry in the Hamakua coast for at least 100 years. The closure of the Hamakua Sugar Plantation drastically altered the community in general. Today, the area is fed economically with a mixture of tourism, farming and ranching. The largest employers are the hotels in South Kohala and North Kona. The largest skilled labor employers are the Hamakua Energy Partners and the increasing number of construction and development projects.
