Ho'okena Elementary School, situated in rural South Kona, is located 20 miles south from the town of Kailua-Kona. The school spans a total geographic area of 17 miles, north from Kealia, south to Honomalino, and down to coastal areas of Ho'okena Beach and Miloli'i Village.
Ho'okena Elementary completed its seventh year of affiliation with the school reform model, America's Choice School Design, in implementing standards-based learning. For the second continuous year, Ho'okena met Adequate Yearly Progress and proudly achieved School in Good Standing, Unconditional status.
The School Community Council and the school's very supportive P.T.O. worked in tandem with administration and staff to further the vision and mission of Ho'okena Elementary School. Through the combined efforts of the SCC, PTO, and the school, several new computers were purchased for classrooms to replace old, nonfunctioning ones. The groups are committed to continue fundraising for new computers during the coming school year.
Other parent involvement activities included Kinder Kamp, Open House featuring modeling by teachers of standards-based reading, writing, and math workshops, regularly scheduled Parent Coffee Hours, and PSAP parent activities.
In order to promote the Konawaena Complex's focus on rigorous instructional practices where students are challenged to use their minds well, Ho'okena also conducted "Think-With-Me" parent involvement sessions. Parents observed classroom workshop sessions where students were challenged to use their minds well and learn by applying problem solving strategies. A debriefing session after the observations provided parents with tools and strategies they could then use to help their child at home."
