This year marks the 76th year that 'Iao School has served students of the Wailuku community. Currently, the school has three grade levels (grades 6, 7 and 8) and is the intermediate school for the four-school Baldwin Complex.
Family profiles in the 'Iao School district range from rural and agricultural to large housing developments and condominiums; from farming to service and construction jobs to businesses and professions. As the center of government for Maui County, Wailuku attracts many professional people. Located in the attendance area are four federal housing projects, the Maui Correctional Center, a homeless shelter, an assisted low-income housing complex, apartments, condominiums, and individual homes valued at a few thousand to almost a million dollars.
One of the major changes to our school’s physical appearance is the renovation of the Wailuku Armory which is now Building J. After a year’s delay, Building J was finally certified for occupancy in February, the staff did not move into the new building until the summer taking into account the time of the school year and keeping disruption to students and staff at a minimum. The building has been used to house the administrative offices, the English department, a computer lab, some special education classes and our new dining center. Building J has also provided 'Iao School the opportunity to host DOE, school and community meetings supporting our involvement within the community.
The implementation of new programs on our campus was also a positive change that our community had experienced. During the summer of 2004 'Iao staff attended TRIBES training for middle schools along with planning meetings for the component advisoradvise program. Following training in both the Middle School and TRIBES concepts the implementation of the advisory took place. TRIBES activities take place approximately twice a month, and they have assisted our community in providing a feeling of inclusion on campus.
'Iao School underwent a WASC accreditation visit in March and was given a two year accreditation finishing up the six year accreditation. Our new SCBM will meet for the first time on June 14, 2005 to approve the new Title 1 plan.
'Iao continues to provide students with a variety of co-curricular activities including but not limited to, Math Counts, Speech Festival, History Day, Science Fair, Spelling Bee, Solar Car competitions, Kiwanis track Meet and a variety of performances through the arts of music and drama.
