Ilima Intermediate School is located in Ewa Beach, Hi, approximately 20 miles from downtown Honolulu. Originally, the school served both intermediate and high school students. In 1969, Ilima Intermediate became its own entity as an independent public secondary school for the Ewa area.
The Ilima Royales selected their school name because the Honouliuli Community, located four miles northwest from the school, is renown for its Ilima blossoms - the traditional flower of the Hawaiian royalty.
The school serves students from six feeder schools - Pohakea, Kaimiloa, Ewa Beach, Iroquois Point, Holomua, and Ewa Elementary. The area has changed from its roots as a sugar plantation community to a growing suburban community. The students come from a wide range of socio-economic, educational and cultural background.
At Ilima, programs are tailored to enhance the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development of all students. At the "heart" of the program is the middle level education, which incorporates the middle school philosophy and concepts of teaming, comprehensive teacher advisory program, block scheduling, interdisciplinary lessons, varied instructional strategies and a full exploratory program.
Other programs include the Accelerated Reading (AR), Corrective Reading, English Second Language Learners (ESLL), Drug Free School programs, an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, and a Comprehensive School Alienation (CSAP) program. Ilima also offers two after school tutorial programs – Jump Start, sponsored by the 21st Century Grant and the Supplemental Educational Services (SES), sponsored by NCLB.
In 2002, Ilima Intermediate School was accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Accreditation is set for a period of six years, with a mid-term review. The mid-term review took place on February 23, 2005. The accreditation visitation team has assured the school that "appropriate attention was given to critical areas" and accreditation was reaffirmed through the end of the 6-year term ending in 2008. Ilima is operating under School Community Council (SCC).
