Founded in 1933, Jefferson Elementary School (JES) occupies approximately 15 acres of prime real estate in Waikiki. Its facilities include regular education classrooms and an orthopedic unit, special education classes. There are four hundred fifty students enrolled including the orthopedic classes. There are thirty certified teachers and nine certified orthopedic teachers. Two classrooms are at the Shriner's Hospital of the Pacific.
Students at JES come from twenty-three (23) different countries. About twenty percent (20%) of the students qualify for the English Language Learners' (ELL) program. There are approximately eighteen (18) different languages spoken among these students. Approximately sixty percent (60%) of the students enrolled speak a second and third language. The dominant languages are Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and many of the South Pacific Island languages that include Marshallese and numerous Micronesian languages. Among the smaller populations of ELL students, languages spoken come from as far away as Sri Lanka, Egypt, Bosnia, and Brazil.
On the 2005 Hawaii State Assessment, JES student's met annual yearly progress (AYP) and is in good standing unconditional. The teachers at JES attribute their success for meeting AYP to the Harcourt Trophies Reading Program as well as the Everyday Math Program. This coming year (2006-2007) the teachers will be purchasing the Harcourt Trophies Science Program as well as supplemental resources from FOSS Science.
JES has established their School Community Council (SCC) this past school year that involved all parts of the community: administrators, teachers, classified staff, students, parents, and the community.
