Queen Ka'ahumanu Elementary School

Queen Kaahumanu Elementary School is centrally located in the heart of the city and serves a community extending from Alapai Street to Punahou and from Wilder Avenue to Ala Moana Boulevard.

The school community consists primarily of multi-unit complexes (high rise apartments and condominiums) and many small business establishments. More than two-thirds of the housing units in the area are occupied by renters (amongst the highest in the state) contributing to a high transient rate of our students and their families.

The student population includes immigrant children from Korea, China and Vietnam, with noticeable increases in immigrant students from the Pacific Islands. Ka'ahumanu School has one of the highest English as a Second Language student populations, with approximately one-third of the students classified as second language learners. This presents an educational challenge but also adds to the cultural richness and diversity of our student body.

Queen Ka'ahumanu Elementary School provides a comprehensive student support system which includes a federally run Head Start preschool program; an ESLL program with strong Parents as Partners component; a Primary School Adjustment Program to support students' transition to school; School-Based Behavior Health and school counseling services, Title 1 school-wide reading program and an array of services to support the diverse learner.

School activities, including Culture Days, Literacy Night, Positive Behavior assemblies, Queen Kaahumuanu Day, Award and Recognition assemblies and healthy lifestyles programs afford parents and community members an opportunity to interact with Ka'ahumanu School students and observe students demonstrating their learning with quality products and performances.

The Ka'ahumanu Parent Ohana, comprised of parents, community members, faculty and staff, provides personnel support and financial resources to sustain school-wide initiatives and promote parent involvement for school improvement. The School Community Council (SCC) provides a forum for parents and other members of the school community to focus on and contribute to improving student achievement and school performance. The SCC also serves as an advisory board regarding planning, budgeting, implementing and evaluating the school's Academic and Financial plan.

Above all, Kaahumanu School strives daily to live up to its Golden Rule – "Be respectful, responsible, caring and kind."
