Ka`ala Elementary School

Ka`ala Elementary School, named after Mauna Ka`ala, is located in lower Wahiawa. Our students live in a rural town where there is a strong sense of caring and pride for their school. For the past six years, we have implemented Success for All (SFA), a Comprehensive School Reform Reading Demonstration Program (CSRDP), a researched-based curriculum. For the school year 2006-07, we will begin implementing a research-based math curriculum, Everyday Math.

The Ka`ala has approximately 500 students in grades K-5. Pre-plus (Honolulu Community Action Program, HCAP) has a preschool program on campus.

Ka`ala Elementary students work towards attainment of Hawaii's Vision of the High School Graduate by focusing on the six General Learner Outcomes and the Hawaii State Standards. Our three student priorities are student achievement, civic responsibility, and student safety and well-being. .

Our school profile was developed using data from many sources. Some of the data is directly from the School Status and Improvement Reports and results of the annual Hawaii State Assessment testing. This process began with the school conducting self-studies leading to reflection and self-assessments. The focus was always towards the betterment of student achievement. The instructional program is built on what we value, our students, school, and community.

Our Plan is based on Focus Group and Leadership Team review of the fall 2005 AYP Restructuring Team's Paper Review. Teachers have continued using standards-based-lessons, and collecting student evidence. Grade level and K-5 articulation between teachers is ongoing. No Child Left Behind provides all children with fair and equal opportunity in obtaining high quality education.

Many families struggle with poverty, homelessness, and overcrowded dwellings. Individuals in the community are victims of substance abuse, spousal abuse, family violence and other problems. The ensuing reality is that many students are not living in supportive, intact homes. Some parents are incarcerated, share joint custody, or raised their child(ren) as single parents. It is also common for students to live with and be cared for by grandparent(s), foster parents, or by extended family. The percent of families with children living in poverty is 12.9% compared to the State's 11.2%.
