Kahului School with students in preschool to grade 5 is located in the Central Maui area. Historically, the majority of Kahului School's students have come from homes in which a family member worked for Alexander & Baldwin's HC&S sugar plantation and its various enterprises. The growth of the town of Kahului had its beginnings in A & B's "Dream City" residential development in the 1950's, but Kahului has also emerged as the commercial hub of the island.
Kahului continues to be characterized by its historical ties to the plantation's immigrant community, and the school's student ethnic demographics over the years have correlated closely with the changes in the dominant plantation workforce. In recent years, ties to the island's tourism industry have grown within the parent workforce.
As a part of the Maui High Complex, most of the students at Kahului School will attend Maui Waena Intermediate School and Maui High School.
In the 2004-2005 school year, Kahului School established an elected School Community Council of eight members including three parents, one community member, two teachers, one non-certificated personnel and an administrator.
Under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) federal law, Kahului School is in Restructuring. The consultant service of Edison Alliance was utilized in 2005-2006 to assist the school in improving student achievement.
