Kailua Intermediate School (KIS) is situated in a lovely residential area next to the heart of Kailua town two blocks from beautiful white sand beaches. It occupies approximately fourteen acres of land next to the City and County Recreational Park. The school has seven buildings and sixty-one classrooms. The official 2005 enrollment was 793 students supported by 62.5 full-time certificated positions. KIS serves seventh and eighth grade students of various ethnic backgrounds who live in the Kailua/Kalaheo area.
Based on the Middle School Philosophy, the school has teaching and learning teams, advisor/advisee, and exploratory. KIS has continued to expand their elective course offerings in order to allow young adolescent students to explore different areas and develop new interests. In order to meet the diverse needs of students, a well respected Gifted and Talented Program and Special Education Inclusion Program is offered.
The school has 6 computer labs and offers students the opportunity to earn a Technology Certificate upon completion of eighth grade. Three labs are located in the science classrooms and allow students to complete research and present their findings using various form of technology.
As a member of the Foundation of Excellent Schools, KIS focuses on mentoring, service learning, goal setting and early college awareness. Additional partnerships with Kaneohe Marine Corps Base-Hawaii CSSG-3, Joint Ventures for Education Forum, University of Hawaii-Manoa, Windward Community College, Hawaii Pacific University, Chaminade University, Brigham Young University, Boys and Girls Club Hawaii, and The Castle Foundation assist the faculty and staff in providing an excellent education for our students.
To increase the effectiveness of the school learning climate, KIS has established a school wide dress code requiring students to wear a uniform. The Counseling Department offers many support groups including a Deployment Group and the Cultural Exchange Group, which are well used by our young people. A Transition Center is on campus to assist our dependent military students in adjusting to our school.
Continued focus on Literacy, Math, Teaching Teams, Student Behavior and Discipline will assist our school in reaching their rigorous academic goals.
In May of 2005, KIS was awarded an accreditation period of six years with a mid-term review by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges.
