Kainalu Elementary is located between the majestic Koolau mountain range and the beautiful Pacific Ocean in Kailua, Hawaii. The mission of our school is to develop the whole child – academically, aesthetically and socially. Our motto, "Learning, Loving and laughing" best expresses this focus. This philosophy combined with our after school and family night programs have increased student, family and community participation.
Kainalu Elementary School's Vision focuses on the involvement of all role groups in:
- creating an environment where everyone has a love of learning;
- promoting high expectations; and
- creating an atmosphere that respects individuality, fosters, cooperation and provides challenges and opportunities for success.
Our mission is to empower individuals to reach their full potential; cultivate lifelong learning, creativity, responsible decision-making and problem solving; and foster respect. Our school wide learner outcomes are for students to be self-directed learners, collaborative workers, complex thinkers and problem solvers, quality producers and effective communicators through reading, writing, speaking and technology.Kainalu is a Title I school in which 42.8% of our students participate in our free or reduced meal program. Our multi-ethnic student body includes 25% military dependents from our neighboring Marine Base. Fifteen percent of our school population receives special education services. These students have special needs that include: preschool, medically fragile, developmentally delayed, autistic, learning disabled, other health impaired, mentally retarded and emotionally disturbed.
The faculty and staff have a reputation for their passion towards learning, professionalism and compassion. We strive to combine open communication with innovation for the betterment of our students. The Parent Community Network Center (PCNC) coordinator developed a Room Parent group of volunteers that assist in the classrooms, implemented a "Loving Solutions" parenting program and provided an enormous amount of parental support. The Parent Teacher Association and School Community Council provide a welcomed additional perspective towards improvement and excellence in our instruction, student achievement and school environment. In response to our military affected families, Project Heroes was begun. We also began a "Miss U" club for students whose parents or loved ones were deployed. Our PTA purchased "challenge coins" to share between parent and child when one is separated from the other whether it is due to deployment, divorce or incarceration.
Our 51-year-old termite infested covered walkways and classroom roofs continue to be areas of great concern. However, through state appropriations, school donations, and volunteer manpower, Kainalu continues to be an attractive and safe campus.
The Kainalu school community continues to seek excellence and to support our students, so they will become successful, lifelong learners.
