Originally established in 1966 as an intermediate school, Kalaheo became a high school in 1973. It enjoys a reputation for high academic student achievement. The school's vision is to develop a community of learners where individual potential is nurtured in an environment of mutual respect. Its vision is to prepare students for higher education, future employment, and responsible citizenship. The school curriculum offers a wide range of courses, including higher level language arts, math, social studies, and sciences through its Honors and Advanced Placement courses. In the past 3 years, the number of Honor and AP classes increased from 10 to 16.
In June 2004, Kalaheo was awarded an accreditation period of six years with a mid-term review by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges.
In the summer of 2005, Kalaheo, Kahuku and King Kekaulike received a $2.4 million federal grant to establish smaller learning communities over a five year period. In 2006/2007, all ninth grade students will be assigned to one of two houses which will include the subjects: English, science and social studies. Each teaching team will develop an instructional program to integrate academic content, develop a sense of community and personalize the learning environment"
