Kalakaua Middle School is approximately two miles west of downtown Honolulu and two miles east of the airport. It has a large immigrant population and qualifies as a Title 1 school. Its pedagogy is based upon middle school philosophy and includes teaming, advisory, heterogeneous groupings, and exploratory programs. In 1999 it adopted the America's Choice School Design reform model. Implemented AC features include double language arts classes for 6th- 8th graders and safety net classes afterschool, on Saturdays, and in the summer. In addition to intramural and extramural programs, Kalakaua has a drill team and various afterschool clubs: Book Club, Rocketry Club, Anime Club, and Friendship Club.
In SY 2003-2004 it participated in the State's GEAR UP Program to supplement its efforts to enable students to meet the HCPS II standards. In SY 2005-2006 it entered into partnership with the UH GEAR UP organization to provide tutoring and college preparatory activities to interested 6th and 7th graders afterschool, on Saturdays, and in the summer.
Kalakaua Middle School was accredited in 2002 by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges for a period of six years and passed its midterm accreditation review in April 2005 with no additional recommendations and no identified areas of new concern.
