Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Elementary and Intermediate School is a K-8 school located in the small rural community of Papaikou (population under 2,000), six miles from downtown Hilo. We serve small, neighboring communities of Honolii, Pauka'a, Papaikou, Pepeekeo, Honomu and Hakalau.
Our second year of America's Choice School Design implementation was supported with the addition of a Math Coach. This year we started "Teacher Specialists", which means that teachers in grades 3, 4, and 5 are either an ELA (Elementary Language Arts) or Math specialist for their grade level.
Student learning was also supported through the implementation of Intermediate Block Scheduling, Diana Day's Vision Management and Enhancing the Vision Programs, and Elan's Antibullying Program. Vision Management and Enhancing the Vision provide teachers with strategies to help students become selfdirected learners by managing their own behaviors and setting academic and/or behavior goals.
This school year we experienced the Focus On Learning (FOL) Accreditation Process for the first time. It proved to be a very challenging, but rewarding experience. Our self-study process helped us to focus on our strengths and need areas, which led to a clearer focus on our school's needs as we revised our Strategic and Academic Plans for SY 2006-07. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) awarded our school a three year term.
Unfortunately, we did not make NCLB AYP benchmark last school year, forcing us into Restructuring. We spent time this school year preparing for our restructuring efforts which includes revising our SY 2006-07 Academic Plan.
We continue to experience a steady increase of English as a Second Language Learners (ESLL). Our PCNC and ESL Newcomer's EA have worked hard to have our Newsletter translated into Tagalog and Marshallese, as well as engage our ESL families in parent nights with translators to support them.
Other programs that have supported our students are Headstart (Pre-school), PSAP (Gr. K-3), Right Track Tutoring (Gr. 3- 4), Supplemental Educational Service (SES, for qualified students K- 8), Kamaaina Kids and ESL Newcomers Programs. Our teachers and staff also provide before and after school tutoring and enrichment for academics, ukulele making and playing, and support to meet reading goals.
As we look to SY 2006-07 we are faced with the reality of a declining student population and decrease of staff due to the Weighted Student Formula.
