Kalihi-kai Elementary School

With an enrollment of 737 students, Kalihi-Kai is one of the largest elementary schools in the Honolulu District, serving students in grades kindergarten through five. The school is situated in the heart of a busy business community amidst several financial institutions, various ethnic and "local" food restaurants, numerous "mom and pop" type stores, two small shopping centers as well as bicycle and auto supply shops. Doctors, dentists, churches, and other service providers are also in the neighborhood.

The majority of our students are of immigrant backgrounds where English is a second language. Most students entering kindergarten have no previous preschool experiences. Therefore, our teachers are challenged to provide all students with many experiences to develop their language and thinking. All classroom instruction includes the development of speaking, reading, writing and thinking skills, through teacher developed standards-based integrated units.

Each grade level has developed three to four units that are taught through a consistent literacy system throughout the school year. The school is implementing a recently purchased school wide math program and science learning modules for all students.
