Kalihi-uka Elementary School

Kalihi Uka Elementary School is an urban community school located on a one-acre city block in upper Kalihi Valley. The school opened its first four classroom doors in 1921 to 117 children in Grades 2 through 5 with Mrs. Elizabeth Abrehamsen, Principal and 3 teachers. Today, with fifteen classrooms, a library, and a cafetorium, the year-round school serves approximately 280 students in Pre-K and Kindergarten through Grade 5. 1n 2001, Kalihi Uka Elementary School adopted the comprehensive school reform model America's Choice School Design to help students achieve National and State standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science. The reform model components include the 25 Book (1 Million Words) Campaign and the Book of the Month program.

The school has been operating under School Community-Based Management (SCBM) since 1995. Beginning in August 2004, the SCBM Council transitioned to the School Community Council, as a pilot for Act 51's School Community Council (SCC) and Weighted Student Formula, which has elected school, parent, student and community representatives in place. The school implements the Comprehensive Student Support System (CSSS) to provide early intervention and prevention strategies to support students in their academic achievement. The faculty and staff implement a schoolwide Rituals and Routines as part of its Positive Behavior System (PBS) focusing on the three expectations for students to be always safe, responsible and respectful. In addition, the "Gotcha" ticket program recognizes and rewards students' positive behaviors and instills civic responsibility in all members of the school community. Within the school's CSSS Array of Services, the faculty and staff provide Counseling, Primary School Adjustment Program, English for Second Language Learners, Hawaiiana, Special Services and Parent Community Networking. The A+ program serves families for after school care needs.

The Vision of Kalihi Uka School is to "work to our fullest potential, contribute positively to our community, and strive to be life-long learners." The Mission of Kalihi Uka School is "All students leaving Kalihi Uka Elementary School will be prepared to enter secondary school. They will have either met or exceeded the state standards, as well as met or exceeded the standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics on the Hawaii State Assessments." The school's faculty and staff sustain the Vision and Mission through their curricular, instructional and assessment efforts towards raising student achievement in meeting and exceeding the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards III in the nine content areas. These efforts are reflected in the school's Strategic Plan and Academic and Financial Plan, which support the student priorities of academic achievement, civic responsibility and safety and well-being.
