Kamakahelei Middle School

Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School serves grades 6-8 in Kauai District's Central Complex. The rural student population is ethnically diverse and CKMS qualifies for the Title I program, drawing from the Koloa, Lihue, Kalaheo and Hanamaulu areas. The school learning is grounded in standards-based education with an emphasis in literacy (reading, writing, math) and technology. The school embraces the middle school philosophy with balanced curriculum based on the needs of young adolescents; exploratory programs; interdisciplinary teaming; balancing the academics with the affective; and advisory programs.

The school is focusing on using an interdisciplinary unit model of instruction in order to integrate standards-based education with curriculum based on the needs of adolescents. Critical to instruction is the balancing of formative assessments that monitor daily student learning with summative assessments that assess achievement of the standards. The school is working towards making interdisciplinary units that are relevant, rigorous, and build positive relationships among students, staff, families, and community.

To achieve its vision of E Holomua I Ka Na'auao – "Progress Through Knowledge" Constantly Learning, Always Improving.

CKMS has integrated the Focus On Learning school improvement model into the school organizational structure. The school has adopted the Tribes learning community process to provide a positive host environment that supports student achievement. CKMS received a six-year accreditation term from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in March 2005.
