Kapa'a Elementary School

Kapa'a Elementary School shares a campus with Kapa'a High School, and serves the Kawaihau District, which includes the Wailua Homesteads and the area east of the Wailua River to Moloa'a Stream. The school's large campus provides an educational gathering place for many smaller rural communities such as Anahola, Kealia, Kapa'a town, Kapa'a Houselots, and the Kapa'a Homesteads. Agricultural lands weave the eastside's many neighborhoods into one larger community.

The school's population represents a wide range of socioeconomic levels and ethnicities. Approximately 46% of the families at Kapa'a Elementary School are Hawaiian and part Hawaiian and 19% are Filipino.

A unique feature of Kapa'a Elementary School is the use of a Schools-Within-a-School (SWS) model, founded on research about small schools that addresses the various advantages of smaller, intimate learning communities (Raywid, 1997). The seven Schoolswithin- Schools at Kapa'a Elementary are comprised of enterprising teacher teams offering programs that emphasize particular learning approaches or content areas using research based strategies and practices. The application of this SWS model encourages teachers, students, and parents to become part of a smaller educational community that provides a more personalized environment and program continuity from year to year. All SWS teams regularly engage in program development based on evaluation of current needs using assessment data, student and parent feedback, and student products and performance. The entire school community aligns on common school wide goals, and each SWS team develops a continuous improvement plan that defines how each SWS will support its students in achieving proficiency with the Hawai'i Content and Performance Standards. Teachers collaborate in K-5 SWS teams, as well as in traditional grade level teams, to address standards-based instruction, curriculum, and assessment.

A major strength of Kapa'a Elementary School is the adoption of a prevention and early intervention model for assisting beginning readers. All SWS teams work together for a unified mathematics improvement and implementation plan. Additionally, the Comprehensive Student Support System (CSSS) is in place and is supported by the coordinated efforts of the Family Focus Team and a well represented Family Focus Group. Annually, the Parent, Teacher, and Student Association (PTSA) produces a Family Fun Night event, which is a tremendous success for the entire school community.

Unity in diversity is a hallmark of Kapa'a Elementary's efforts to meet the needs of all children and their families. Parent and community involvement is always encouraged and welcomed.
