Kapaa Middle School is a public school located on the east side of Kauai. It is situated atop a plateau on an 18-acre parcel of land. It overlooks the southern end of Kapaa town and is bordered by agricultural/residential lands.
The school services the Kawaihau and Hanalei Districts. A total of four elementary schools feed into the middle school. King Kaumualii and Kapaa Elementary students at 6th grade and Hanalei and Kilauea students enter from Grade 7. The school is in a suburban/rural area, which includes the Hawaiian Homes in Anahola, the Public Housing in Kapaa, and various income families in other residential areas.
The school's programs and initiatives are supported by the PTSA and the school's School Community Council. These and other groups continue to support parent involvement opportunities such as Parent Literacy workshops, ESLL parent support, various excursions, building a Science department butterfly house, science fair and other school wide events.
National educational programs such as Gear Up, Ex-CELL/John Hopkins University, and Hawai'i Networked Learning Communities, a Hawaiian trust partnership, and various grants such Volcanoes Alive Project and Migrant Education Program help the school maintain its mission and goals. A district-initiated "Adopt-A-School" program has partnered mentors of a local engineering company and practical arts students. Many other programs help to provide students with a positive middle school experience.
