Collaboration of students, parents, educators, and community representatives who served on the Kapolei Middle School Task Force resulted in the design of Kapolei Middle School. The school plant and curriculum emphasize the middle school concepts of meeting the social, emotional, and academic needs of adolescents based on Turning Points 2000 and This We Believe. Science/technology and culture are central to the curricular offerings. Kapolei Middle School provides up-to-date technology that is integrated in all aspects of the school.
A maximum of 1200 students can be accommodated by the existing facilities. When enrollment topped 1500 students in SY 2001 -2002 conversion to the multi-track schedule occurred. Kapolei Middle began a four-track system where three-fourths of the students and teachers are on campus at any one time. As of April 2004, the student population grew to 1,671. Currently, as of May 1, 2006, the population at Kapolei Middle is 1557 students.
Teaming is a major cohesive force in the success of Kapolei Middle School and is congruent with the middle school philosophy. Students are grouped into teams consisting of Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Elective teachers. Teams are heterogeneously grouped. Students with a wide range of abilities are placed together to reflect real life communities. Teachers serve advisors for students on their team. Core team teachers share a common planning time and coordinate their efforts to provide the best instructional program for their group of students.
