Ka'u High School & Pahala Elementary School

Ka'u High & Pahala Elementary School, one of Hawaii's few K - 12 schools, is located in the southern district of the Big Island in the town of Pahala. Its enrollment is approximately 520 and encompasses students from all communities within the district. Its student body also includes several Geographical Exceptions in grades K - 7 from its feeder-school in Naalehu.

In 2005-2006, the Eighth Grade class from Naalehu School was transferred to Ka'u High & Pahala Elem. School, whereas in the past this took place at the Ninth Grade level at which point these students normally came to Ka'u High to complete their high school education. The 05-06 transfer brought about changes in the configuration of the school to: elementary level K-5, middle or intermediate level 6-8, and high school 9-12. This configuration has proven to be effective in the delivery of instruction and corrective interventions suitable for students at each level. Each of the three levels has its own established master schedule and bell schedule and are located in separate areas of the school campus.

The Intervention Plan, implemented in the 04-05 school year continues to be the basis for the school's effort to bring about academic improvement. It provides focused instruction in the areas of reading and math and establishes definite parameters in which to provide assistance and interventions needed for students who do not meet proficiency on the Standards.
