Kauluwela Elementary School

Kauluwela School is one of nine schools in the McKinley Complex in the Honolulu District. The school is located in busy Honolulu city and serves many students who have recently arrived from China and other Asian countries. As a result, English proficiency and basic skills (reading, writing, math, listening and speaking) are emphasized and integrated into all curriculum areas. Students are assessed frequently. Assessment data is used to design a challenging curriculum with instructional strategies that meet student needs as well as extends student skills

The school's language arts (reading, writing, listening and speaking) program is a researched-based program (Direct Instruction) that is used by many schools in the United States. Every student is tested before being assigned to an instructional group. Student progress is closely monitored through weekly reports and quarterly reports. The school's reading and writing computer program is used to support and reinforce reading and writing skills learned in instructional groups. Computer classes are also provided after school where students learn to use the web for research or use software to enhance reports or holiday projects. Other after school classes include chorus, hula, and art classes. ""Homework Clubs"" and tutoring are also provided.

Kauluwela's Core Knowledge program is used to develop a strong background in science and social studies to better enable students to comprehend what they hear, see and read about in their daily lives. Students learn about ancient history and how present events are often influenced by the past. Science is a hands-on experience with students conducting experiments and writing about their conclusions based on their findings.

Parents are involved in their students' learning in a variety of ways throughout the school year. Before long intercessions, parents participate in activities where they experience their students' curriculum and they learn strategies to help them support their students' academic progress. Instructional materials are provided for the parents to use throughout intercessions. Many bilingual parents also attend English Proficiency classes during the school day or in evening classes.

During the Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer intercessions, students are invited to attend Reading Camps. Teachers not only reinforce language and math skills but also expose students to Hawaii's rich environment through fieldtrips.
