Four miles above downtown Hilo's post office, on the 'gateway' to the Saddle Road, is Kaumana Elementary School. We were a rural, farming community when we opened our doors in 1906. We retain this 'rural feel' today.
Our grades 3 and 5 have done well in state assessments. For the past two school years, SY 2004-05 and SY 2005-06, our No Child Left Behind status, Annual Yearly Progress Result has been Good Standing, Unconditional.
We have just completed our second school year of our new math curriculum, Math Investigations. Our Kindergarten through grade 2 classes will have completed their first year of America's Choice practices to help improve our reading and writing scores. By the end of the next school year, SY 2006-07, all grade levels will be implementing America's Choice.
With other schools of our North Hilo Complex, we have made the transition from an SCBM model to Act 51's School Community Council (SCC). Our second election for new council members was just completed in May, 2006. We have an experienced Council and look forward to the coming school year.
