King Kaumuali'i Elementary School is a K-5 elementary school, located in the Puna District on the island of Kauai. Set on 8.631 acres, the school opened its doors in September 1990. King Kaumuali'i Elementary School services two communities separated by the Wailua River, Hanamaulu & part of the Wailua Homesteads area. King Kaumuali'i is home to approximately 530 students.
Students wear uniform school t-shirts to promote school spirit, pride and safety on campus. The 4 Bs (Be Safe (Malama), Be Respectful (Ho'ihi), Be Cooperative (Laulima), Be Responsible (Kuleana) are a school wide emphasis, as the Positive Behavior Support Team focuses on the positive emotional and social growth of all students.
One of the major efforts undertaken by the school was to incorporate planning/articulation time for teachers within the school day. The "6 on 1" model provided planning time for grade levels every 6 days throughout the year. Within these professional learning communities, grade levels work on Standards-based units in Science and Social Studies, review curriculum maps along with assessment tasks, develop common assessments for the content areas, develop a collection of exemplars by reviewing student work. Planning days have also included the sharing of best practices.
Standards-Based instruction is further enhanced with the implementation of the standards-based report card, initiated in the 2005-2006 school year.
The Family Focus Team continues to work on creative ways to improve family involvement in all aspects of the school community.
King Kaumuali'i is supported by an active Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) and under ACT 51, has implemented the School Community Council during the 2005-06 school year.
