Prince David Kawananakoa Middle School is located on the outskirts of downtown Honolulu. It was established in 1927 as an experimental school serving 827 students in grades one through eight. In 1940, the school was officially changed to Kawananakoa Intermediate School and served 1,050 students in grades 7 through 9. In 1998, the name changed to Kawananakoa Middle School. Currently, the school serves students from grades 6 through 8 with an enrollment of approximately 800 students.
Kawananakoa Middle School continues to receive numerous awards and recognitions in band, the spelling bee and math competitions, as well as in haiku, poetry, art, and multimedia contests.
Kawananakoa Middle School is also proud of its past record of exceeding national norms in state-wide testing in the areas of reading and math and will continue to work towards maintaining this standard despite its changing student population. The school has qualified to be a Title I School.
The school was awarded a six-year accreditation term with a 3 year mid review by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges this school year.
