Kea'au High School

Kea'au High School is located south of Hilo in the Puna district on the island of Hawai'i. Once a bustling plantation mill community, Kea'au still considers itself a small town. The town and outlying community support the new high school (opening its doors in the fall of 1999), a middle school and an elementary school. 80% of the students commute from an outlying area of 112 square miles to the campus.

The campus sits on 56 acres of land and comfortably accommodates all the academic and athletic activities for the 800 plus students and 100 plus staff members. The land was donated to the state from W.H. Shipman. Ltd , who operated the defunct sugar mill. The company continues to support all the schools in the complex. Campus facilities support both the core and elective courses comfortably. Buildings that house elective courses are state of the art with equipment that is equitable to private industry. Athletic facilities are host to many Big Island Interscholastic activities because of its convenient location and capacity for large crowds. Most buildings are enclosed, air conditioned and have integrated technology access.

The school follows the "Breaking Ranks" reform model and implements several recommended initiatives. This year marked the first year of grade level academies at the freshmen level. Freshmen were invited to a transition program in the summer to orient new students to the high school.

The academy promotes an interdisciplinary approach with a collaborative group of teachers meeting on a daily basis. Within two years all students will be part of an academy at grade 9 and grade 10. The school practices inclusion for the 217 IDEA students and growing ESL population.

This school year also marked the start of the Middle College, a partnership with the Hawai'i Community College. At-risk students in danger of dropping out are taught by both a high school teacher and professors at the community college for dual credits. The program is the first in the state and mirrors the "Running Start" program for college prep students.

Kea'au High is proud of the teaching staff. There are two teachers who received the distinction of being nationally certified. One of the teachers was also selected as the state's Teacher of the Year. New teachers to the school have mentors who help them weather the challenges of a high school. The teachers and counselors help to get students to meet the Average Yearly Progress as well as meet the state's goal of all students graduating without remediation. Last year sophomores met some AYP indicators to place the school in "safe harbor", and 87% of the seniors graduated with the Class of 2006.
