Kealakehe Elementary School

On the slopes of Hualalai, overlooking Kailua Bay on the Kona Coast, Kealakehe Elementary School is home to 1000 students in pre-K to Grade Five from a wide range of ethnic and economic backgrounds.

Previously designated as a 'Standards-in-Action School' by Superintendent Hamamoto, and former West Hawaii CAS A. Rho, Kealakehe Elementary completed Year 2 implementation of the Comprehensive Reform Model, America's Choice for School Design (ACSD). As part of the systemic 'design' of America's Choice, several elements continue as part of the school's literacy programs. These elements include the New Standards Performance Standards, the Million Words Reading Campaign, and the Principals' Book of the Month. Three Literacy Coaches assisted faculty in implementing a daily two hour literacy block incorporating Readers and Writers Workshops as well as a half hour skills block in Gr. K-2. As part of the America's Choice Leadership Team, the principal, coaches and Parent Community Outreach Coordinator (PCOC) met weekly to plan and discuss implementation, and staff development. Teachers continued with the 3rd year implementation of Investigations in Number Data and Space, a conceptual, standards-based mathematics curriculum. Teachers piloted FOSS science program schoolwide. Kealakehe Elementary is a member of the West Hawaii Complex that was awarded the NCLB Literacy Math & Science Integration Project. A cadre of teachers is participating in the Space Foundation which is a major part of this grant.

Many other programs were implemented to meet special student needs such as Special Education Inclusion and Gifted and Talented clusters in regular education classrooms; full time ESLL teacher and EA assistance for second language learners; a Schoolwide Title I and Reading Intervention/Reading Recovery program for at-risk learners and Migrant Education project. Primary School Adjustment Program (PSAP) and Kindergarten Transition Activities also assist with the transition of primary students. The school supports three Special Education Preschool Inclusion Programs. A partnership with Headstart is located on site. A second program is with Montessori Preschool and located at their facility.

The Kealakehe C.A.R.E...Cooperation, Acceptance, Responsibility and Enjoyment - part of the Positive Behavior Supports (PBS), is a program designed to enhance student behaviors schoolwide.
