The Wave Riders place a strong emphasis on Citizenship and have identified building relationships, showing respect, and being responsible to self and community as our foundation values. Mornings start with a focusing activity including an ID check, appropriate dress check, and the Pledge of Allegiance. This activity is followed by a Citizenship lesson delivered over closed circuit. Board members enthusiastically voiced their support to continue expanding the curriculum. Students receive a Social studies credit for successful completion of the course.
A comprehensive high school, Kealakehe offers a broad range of core courses and a wide variety of electives including courses in technology, the arts, and foreign languages. In addition to the base curriculum, honor sections and Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in English, Social Studies, Math, and Science. The Career and Technical Education (CTE) department offers courses that provide experiences in operating businesses that market retail products. Program highlights include CAD drafting, hydroponics and bio-remediation agriculture classes, and technology coursework in graphic arts communication. The Fine Arts department boasts a solid drawing and painting program and offers an AP art class. The athletic program fields over 40 teams participating in boys and girls, JV and varsity sports. To engage parents in their children's activities, the Parent-Community Center coordinator and members of the site based council work tirelessly to support the school.
To implement to BOE mandate for all seniors to complete a transition plan, KHS will implement school wide ECOS, which is a comprehensive online tool intended to complement our school's effort to guide Students (and their families) through the process of making important life decisions and providing them with the information they need to achieve their career goals. For the SY 06/07 the school will implement Peer Education and Infant/Toddler Grads Program. In addition, the Weighted Student Formula and the Academic Financial Plan, School Community Council, mandate by Act 51, Reinventing Education Act of 2004, will be implemented. The flexibility provided will increase assistance for struggling students, additional funds for technology and increase security.
