Kealakehe Intermediate School serves approximately 950 6th, 7th and 8th grade students of North Kona. We are the largest enrollment of any intermediate/middle school in the district. The rapid growth of the North Kona Community has added to our already diverse culture. K.I.S. averages a 20% turnover of students throughout the school year. We have a substantial ESLL population. Our SPED population remains a somewhat constant 7 to 9%.
The school's vision is, "Kealakehe Intermediate School; A safe and Cooperative Learning Community where:
- Heart
- Attitude
- Work and
- Knowledge
- Nurture the Mind and Spirit of the Students.
School/Community Council, PTO, and various community groups are important partners to the school's mission to promote quality relationships within the entire school community.
Kealakehe Intermediate School believes in teaming, interdisciplinary instruction, exploratory electives, and advisory periods to help in the academic, physical, social and emotional development of our school students. The school emphasizes Reading, Writing, and Responsibility.
Kealakehe Inter is entering restructuring this school year. Therefore we are adopting the America's Choice school reform model. We are mandating "Ramp-Up" classes for students who can move from "partially proficient" to "proficient" on the Hawaii State Assessment. To better facilitate this change, we are also implementing block scheduling this coming school year.
Another important addition/change for the 2006-2007 school year is our implementation of WIN2000. This is an important computer-based resource which we can use to improve student comprehension of math and language arts, both at school and via the school server to children receiving public school instruction offcampus.
Technology has received other big boosts on our campus in the past few months. The entire school has now been wired with optical cables for better internet and phone connectivity. We are planning on implementing a new phone system that will connect all classrooms and offices. Our website continues to be updated and upgraded and now contains more data than ever.
One of the most exciting features anticipated in the very near future is our new administration/library building. Early phases of construction will probably start early in 2007. The construction will take a while to complete, and we will not be able to move into the building this school year, but we are full of anticipation.
This year we will continue many of the excellent programs we have initiated in recent years. They include our anti-bullying training for students, the presence of our full-time School Resource Officer who also leads our D.A.R.E. Program, an ongoing school beautification program and community outreach and involvement.
