Keolu Elementary School

Keolu Elementary School sits at the foothills of the Ko'olau mountains, in the Windward district of O'ahu. The school is situated in the Keolu Hills, Enchanted Lake area, adjacent to the Keolu Baseball Field and Park. Keolu Elementary, located on Keolu Drive, is a part of the Kailua Complex, which includes six elementary, two intermediate, and one high school. We proudly provide a positive school climate to a multi-ethnic population where the Keolu, Kailua and Waimanalo communities come together in the interest of student achievement and well-being. Our campus is clean, safe, quiet, family-oriented, and our staff and students endeavor to embrace the ideal of "kina'ole" that is doing the right thing, in the right way, at the right time, in the right place, to the right person, for the right reason, with the right feeling… the first time. Our community partnerships include healthy relationships with the US Navy's VPU-2 Wizards, Papa John's Pizza, the Pali Lions, the Hawaii Ballroom Dancing Association, the Enchanted Lakes Baptist Church, the Enchanted Lakes Safeway, and the Enchanted Lakes McDonalds, just to name a few.

Keolu Elementary School PSAP (Primary School Adjustment Program)

PSAP-Primary School Adjustment Project provides encouragement and support services to young children with social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties to help each child function more effectively to learn in the classroom, school and community.

The Primary School Adjustment Project provides direct help to children so that they can enjoy a positive school experience.
Within the realm of Comprehensive Student Support Services (CSSS), the classroom teachers identify children who may benefit from the PSAP. Parents can also address their concerns with their child's teacher, Counselor (Li'i Bee), PSAP Counseling Aide (Kalei Mahaulu).

All children are faced with multiple challenges to which they must adapt--starting a new school, changes in family structure or perhaps a new teacher.
Some children are shy, withdrawn, or have difficulty adjusting to a school setting. Left unchecked, such situations can lead to greater difficulties in later grades.

How does the program work?

A meeting will be arranged with the PSAP team which consists of the teacher, parent/guardian, counselor, PSAP counseling aide and the PSAP consultant. Occasionally if a parent is unable to attend, their feeling and concerns are very important and will be treated with utmost care. A plan will be developed that will include goals that will be fostered through the child's participation in PSAP. The counseling aide typically works with the child once a week through child-led play buiding on self-expression. Child-led expressive play in a safe environment with a nurturing and caring adult allows for the practice and development of skills necessary for a successful school experience.

Keolu Elementary School Technology

Technology is integrated into the classroom curriculum. Students in grades K-6 visit the technology lab once a week for 45 minutes to work on various projects.

Students in grades 2-6 have access to a web-based literacy program by Achieve3000. Grades 2-5 use KidBiz3000 and Grade 6 use TeenBiz3000. KidBiz/TeenBiz3000 provide individualized instruction for reading according to a students' Lexile level. Our students may log onto KidBiz/TeenBiz with their username and password.

Keolu Elementary School Enrichment/Multimedia

The Enrichment/Multimedia Program foundation is based on the 6 General Learner Outcomes. Students use multimedia tools to be self-directed learners, community contributors, complex thinkers, quality producers, effective communicators, and effective and ethical users of technology.

This year our focus is on the Kawainui Marsh Project. Students in grades 3-5 vigorously worked on producing a multimedia story about the life of an 'o'opu who gets lost and through his travels he meets indigenous and introduced animals who live in Kawainui Marsh.

Grade 6 did research on aquatic life living in the marsh. The students used print resources along with online information to create a visual and written report on these endemic and indigenous stream animals. They have been introduced to animation using HyperStudio and GifBuilder. Students will be publishing webpages to build awareness of our unique environment within our community, as well, as globally.
