Keonepoko Elementary School

Keonepoko Elementary School (KES) is located in the rural community of Pahoa, on the eastern side of the Island of Hawaii serving 600+ students in a K-6 setting. The majority of students (74%) are characterized as disadvantaged, or students receiving free or reduced-cost lunch. In its 15 year history, KES has served a multicultural student population (approximately 51% are of Hawaiian/ Part Hawaiian ancestry) and takes pride in its surroundings while embracing the spirit of ohana (family). The school strives for excellence in meeting the needs of all students and sustains its efforts to work toward continuous school improvement.

Since the opening in SY 1990-91, KES has expanded from a K-3 to a K-6 school with the addition of new buildings to support its growth. KES was selected as a Pre-Plus preschool site in 2003. Last year the school began participating in a partnership with Kamehameha Schools to sponsor a Tutu and Me program. This year the partnership also included the implementation of an after school tutoring program, on the KES campus, for complex area K-12 students.

KES is dedicated to implementing standards-based education to all students. As a Hawaii Reading First and Title I School, resources are coordinated to support the school's core reading program Success For All (SFA), as well as other schoolwide initiatives. The school is in its seventh year of implementation of SFA, which includes a tutoring component to support struggling readers. The school is in its fourth year of implementing the Harcourt Math curriculum K-6. KES is committed to continuous professional development for the teachers and has a professional development calendar, including an articulation block per grade level approximately every ten days.

The school encourages a partnership with parents through monthly SFA Family Reading Nights, Open House, Parent/Teacher Conferences, as well as hosting annual celebrations showcasing student progress toward achieving state standards and the General Learner Outcomes (GLO's).

The KES School Community Council (SCC) continues its efforts to develop and strengthen parent/community involvement in school improvement. The SCC provides a forum through which parents and other members of the school community can actively contribute to improving student achievement. This year the SCC was involved in the schools Academic and Financial planning for SY 2006-07 and met monthly to review student academic data and other educational issues that affect student learning.
