Koloa Elementary School

Köloa School is located on the leeward, sunny south shore of Kaua'i. Köloa is situated in an historic plantation community, with a residential area of long-time residents, as well as a major tourist destination with resort hotels and condominiums on the near coastline. Köloa is the site of the first commercial sugar plantation in the Hawaiian Islands, and is also the oldest public school on Kaua'i, established in 1877.

The school serves preschool to grade five students that live in the Köloa, Läwa'i, 'Öma'o and Po'ipü areas. A strong feeling of 'ohana characterizes the school-community, and the majority of students live within walking distance of the school, while buses provide transportation for those students whose residences are in the rural areas of 'Öma'o and Läwai. The local economy is primarily visitor industry based.

As a Tribes school, all members of the Köloa school-community are encouraged to practice the four Tribes agreements of Appreciations, No Put Downs, Attentive Listening and Mutual Respect in all settings. As its framework for behavioral expectations, Köloa School is a community where students, staff and families are working together to support academic excellence and healthy social-emotional development through the incorporation of Tribes by all members.

Major initiatives to improve student achievement have included the establishment of math and reading coaches, who provide instructional support and lesson planning, implementation of standards-based instruction and formative and summative assessments, and aligning instruction to HCPS III. A school-wide focus on implementing the Positive Behavior Support system has resulted in increased positive student behavior, and a decrease in referrals. Morning Club, Homework Club, 'Ukulele Club, as well as A+ are programs which provide extended day activities for students.

Community support assists Köloa School in a number of ways: Reading and Math Tutors, Rotary Readers and Technology Partnerships with local businesses enrich student learning experiences. Monetary support from the Köloa Rotary Club, the PTSA, Kukui'ula, LLC, Waterhouse-Watts Grant, and others have supported Köloa School in improving its facilities and ability to service both the school and community.
