Konawaena Elementary School

Konawaena Elementary School serves a diverse population of students in a rural, country setting. Parental occupations range from farming (coffee/macadamia nuts), tourist-related occupations, unskilled and skilled trade, self-employed and professional. Konawaena is a Title I school. Forty-seven percent of our children qualify for free or reduced lunch. The four major ethnic groups served by Konawaena are: part-Hawaiian, Japanese, Caucasian and Filipino.

Konawaena Elementary School's Strategic, Academic and Financial plans reflect the needs of the student population and our school. We are continuously working to improve the delivery of our Comprehensive Student Support Services (CSSS). The three major foci for our plans include: using of standards-based instruction in classrooms by developing curriculum maps – units, lessons and assessments; providing school-wide supports and instructional interventions for struggling students, especially our English Second Language Learners and our Special Education students; and developing and sustaining a collaborative and professional culture.

During School Year 2006 – 2007, Konawaena Elementary will be implementing the comprehensive school reform model, Success for All, for our eighth year. Reading scores have improved greatly using the SFA reading program. SY 2006 – 2007, will be the second year that we are implementing our mathematics program, Investigations in Number, Data and Space.

Our Strategic, Academic and Financial plans are updated annually. Teachers, staff, parents and community members give input to the plans. Our teachers and staff work hard toward accomplishing the goals established in the plans.

Also assisting us in our total school efforts are our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and our School Community Council (SCC). Everyone working together to support students has made a huge difference for our students. Imua Konawaena Elementary!
