Located on the slopes of Mauna Loa in Kealakekua, Konawaena High School is one of two high schools that service West Hawaii. The school boundary extends 35 miles from southern Kailua-Kona to Honomalino. Konawaena's enrollment is stabilizing after the establishment of a high school in North Kona and the change in Konawaena's northern boundary. The school's diverse population reflects the evolution of agrarian and resort lifestyles in the Kona district. Konawaena High School has been a Title I school since 2003-2004. Currently 40% of the student body receives free or reduced meals.
The high school offers a comprehensive academic/elective program, vocational studies, JROTC, and a full complement of co-curricular activities and athletics. KHS also offers programs for disabled students, students with limited English proficiency skills, full counseling services, and a program for parenting teens. There's also an after school alienation program. Graduates go in the usual directions: into the workforce, trade schools, and two and four year colleges.
Konawaena High School operates under a School Community Council (SCC). The faculty is comprised of 65 full and part-time teachers and counselors, most of whom are teaching in their area of certification. 50% have been at Konawaena for more than five years. There is an athletic trainer, a coordinator for special needs students, a part-time Career and Technology Education (CTE) coordinator, and two half-time curriculum coordinators. The school has an active PTSA, two foundations, and supportive alumni.
