Konawaena Middle School, is located in south Kona at Kealakekua. The school population is comprised of 435 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. The school celebrated its 10th anniversary in the 2005-2006 school year.
Konawaena Middle School embraces the philosophy and structures that support learning for early adolescents. Teaming, advisory and exploratory wheel classes are integral parts of the program that support their needs. TRIBES, a character based program has also been incorporated school-wide as a support for social skill development. KMS is a standards in action school. Bedsides the Hawaii State Assessment, KMS also requires students to provide evidence of academic work towards the standards and school wide learning expectations. The evidence is collected in student portfolios that are shared with parents twice a year at student–led conferences. Students are also pre and post assessed each year with the STAR reading and math computerized assessments.
Konawaena Middle School was accredited in 1998 by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges and again in 2005 for a term of six years.
