Lahaina Intermediate School was established in 1978. It is located in West Maui and is the only middle level school in the Lahainaluna Complex. The school continues to be successful in the implementation of the CSSS process and is currently sustaining a very effective Request for Assistance program for all students experiencing difficulty in school.
This year, the Renaissance Program's student participation reached an all time high of over 50%. LIS was accredited this past spring. The Visiting Committee recommended a 2-year term. The school's SID Action Plan has been revised to focus on the FOL Images of Success with an emphasis on data gathering and analysis as our primary target. Recommendations made by the Visiting Committee are being addressed through the SID Action Plan. Use of graphic organizers continue to assist students in their work across all content areas They are used schoolwide.
In addition, during SY2005-2006, reading comprehension in all content areas will be required to support the Corrective Reading Program for students who read below grade level. Due to the large number of students in this program, only the decoding strands have been implemented at this time. All teachers have committed to support all students in reading. Character Education and reading for pleasure continue to be implemented through homeroom period, which also serves as advisor/advisee time. All SPED and ESLL students are fully included in the general education core classrooms which serve as the students' least restrictive environment.
The mission of Renaissance is to bring excellence to Lahaina Intermediate School. Renaissance acknowledges educational achievements and outstanding contributions of students and staff members through a process of reinforcement, recognition, and reward. A "partnership" or alliance consisting of the SCHOOL, the STUDENTS, the TEACHERS, the PARENTS, and the COMMUNITY will celebrate the achievements and hard work of all, while enhancing the educational potential of the student with the end result being a more qualified yound adult ready to enter the work force.A student will be recognized and rewarded if he or she has achieved the goals as set forth under each of the categories.
There are three facets to earning a Renaissance - Partners card:
1.Scholastics
2.Citizenship (behavior)
3.Community Service
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Since we are asking the community to participate in Renaissance, it is only fitting that the student serve the community in some visible manner as a gesture of cooperation in return. We are therefore asking that each student give four hours of service to the community every quarter. This service must be verified in writing by a community member in order for the student to be eligible for the benefits of Renaissance.
CITIZENSHIP
Renaissance does not condone inappropriate behavior. Any student who is suspended once, is placed into ISS, or accumulates three or more class C's or D's will not qualify for a Renaissance incentive card for that quarter. Also, all detentions need to be cleared from the previous and current quarter. At the beggining of each quarter the student has a clean slate with the potential of receiving status for that quarter.
SCHOLASTICS
With an awareness that some students may never achieve straight A's, we have designed the Renaissance-Partners cards to recognized and reward improvement as well as accomplishment. Like the Olympic Athlete, the student will receive GOLD, SILVER, or BRONZE honors.
GOLD- Maintain a grade point average of 3.7 to 4.0
SILVER- Maintain a grade point average of 3.3 to 3.6 (NO D's/ F's)
BRONZE A- Maintain a grade point average of 2.9 to 3.2 (No D's/ F's)
BRONZE B- May enter at 2.5 to 2.8 but must advance or maintain grades for the next quarter (No D's/ F's)
BRONZE C- May enter at 2.1 to 2.4 but must advance or maintain grades for the next quarter (No D's/ F's)
BRONZE D- This group may obtain Bronze status at any time a grade point improvement of .5 is demonstrated (No F's)
Please join our Renaissance Program and help us strive for better education
