Lanai High School & Elementary School

Läna`i High & Elementary School (LHES) is located on the island of Läna`i in the heart of Läna`i City at 1600 feet above sea level. The school has been at its present location since 1937. LHES is the largest of the six (6) K-12 public schools in the State of Hawai`i Department of Education (HIDOE) system. It is also the only school on the island of Läna`i. The campus presents an open and welcoming learning environment and serves as a gathering place for students, faculty, support staff, and the community-at-large. LHES is part of the Hana, Lahaina, Läna`i, Molokai complex area. Because it is a K-12 school and is the only school on Läna`i, LHES is considered its own complex.

The school operates on a modified year-round schedule. Students at the elementary level are educated in self-contained classes through grade 5, with the exception of the fourth grade, which is piloting a homogeneous grouping program for reading. At the secondary level students attend three 85-minute classes per day. The schedule allows students to meet with instructors every other school day for a double period. The longer classes allow teachers to incorporate direct instruction with hands-on application, individualized help, independent research, cooperative learning activities, small group work and enrichment opportunities.

LHES has 39 classrooms, an industrial arts shop, auto shop, cafeteria, gymnasium, and several portable office buildings. The total campus encompasses 13.5 acres. The school recently completed a renovation project (Summer 2003) that included interior and exterior work.
