Laupahoehoe High and Elementary School, founded in 1883, is situated in a picturesque rural community approximately 23 miles north of Hilo and 20 miles south of Honoka'a. It serves the North Hilo and Hamakua areas.
The faculty, staff, and students, in cooperation with the SCC and PCNC have completed several community projects to unite the school and community. These projects include the annual Laupahoehoe Point Project, Journey to the Universe events, Community Partnerships with the Laupahoehoe Train Museum, 50s Cafe, Minut Stop, Akaka Falls Lyons Club with Leo Club, Christmas Wish Program donation, Public Library sponsored events, Foodland Scholarships, drug-free events, the foster grandparents tutoring program, RSVP classroom tutors, Laupahoehoe Music Festival scholarship fund, Earth Day workshops, Library Week activities, Relay for Life, Meredith Fundraising Benefit, School Beautification Project, and monthly family events.
The school has programs such as Career Pathways, GEAR UP, ECOS, HELCO Partnership, Career and Technical Education, and Business Education Partnership to support students with career awareness, exploration, and preparation.
The Right Track Program funded by Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council serves elementary students during and after school with literacy development, positive self image and family involvement.
The school participated in the Journey Through the Universe program sponsored by NASA. Hilo/Laupahoehoe was the thirteenth community in the nation to be involved in the science based program.
Laupahoehoe High and Elementary School was accredited in 2004, by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges for a period of three years.
