Princess Miriam K. Likelike Elementary School, located in the Palama area, has been serving the Kalihi-Palama community since 1922. Students are drawn from densely populated multi-family houses, apartments, and government subsidized housing, the largest being Mayor Wright Homes. We are working to meet the needs of our large and ethnically diverse student population. Beginning before kindergarten we run transitional programs to help future students to be ready to learn with an on-campus preschool and summer pre-K transition classes.
Supporting our students academically has led many of our upper grade teachers to spend extra hours before and/or after school working with their students. Under the guidance of our new principal, we are striving to share the skills and knowledge of our veteran staff. This summer a group of our teachers will train as "peer coaches", so we share exemplary classroom practices.
Our smiling students look forward to coming to a school that nurtures them both in and out of the classroom. You can find our custodians, cafeteria workers, and office staff taking extra time to help our students to feel supported. Our counselor coordinates extracurricular activities that go beyond just participation. Students develop essential skills in group problem solving, anger and conflict management.
